Welcome to the PsychNotes Website!!

PsychNotes, a regular publication of the Psychology Department at Central Connecticut State University, is intended to inform members of the Psychology community (faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, alumni) about current happenings in the Department.

To keep up with the changes on this website, we've made it easy to use a free service called Mind-it, a free, Web-based software tool that automatically sends you an e-mail whenever a web page you've selected has been updated. The instructions for using Mind-it are at the end of this newsletter.

Important Registration Information

The Psychology department will be holding registration for Spring Semester 2000 from November 1-5.  A registration table will be located in front of the Marcus White Lounge (2nd floor, Marcus White Hall) and will be staffed by Psychology Department faculty from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

We have discovered a few errors in the registration book:

Psy 440, Motivation, section 70 meets MW from 4:00-5:15, not MWF.

The prerequisites for both Psy 458, Human Neuropsychology, and Psy 471
Health Psychology, should be listed as Psy 330, Psy 450 or permission of
instructor (there is no Psy 310).

Psychology Humor

Check out: http://users.erols.com/geary/psychology/right.htm  for the new Dr. Katz (of ComedyCentral fame) comic strip.  Perhaps if we call the Hartford Courant, they'll start to carry it.

Job Watch

From time to time, I receive notices about job openings and internships. I post all information I receive on the bulletin boards next to 213 Marcus White. See Issue 1 for information on 4 Clinical Research Assistants (3 flex-time, 1 full-time) being sought by New Britain General Hospital, Behavioral Health Research Unit.

Y2K Update

We will be inviting students and faculty from the other CSU campuses to participate in our Psychology Day celebration scheduled for Thursday, May 11. The day will include both scholarly and social events: a poster session where students can display information about research projects and internship experiences, guest speakers, our 27th Annual Honors Award program, the initiation of new members into Psi Chi, the national Psychology Honor society, as well as food, music and athletic events (faculty-student volleyball game???). We need to have students to help us organize this event. Please contact Dr. Laura Levine (832-3109), advisor to the Psychology Club, if you can assist.

Chair's Corner: Is there life beyond clinical psychology?

Most students originally come to psychology with their heart set on doing clinical work (that's what originally attracted me to the field). While this is certainly a fine career choice, the large number of people applying to graduate programs in clinical psychology make it a very competitive enterprise.  At most top-notch clinical Ph.D. programs, the acceptance rate is under 10%!  The acceptance rate at PsyD. programs is a little better (about 25%) but, be forewarned, these are very expensive programs and few have any form of financial assistance (assistantships, etc) to help defray the cost.

Students who feel it is their calling to "help others," should realize that there are a multitude of career paths within psychology (and outside of it!) that can lead to satisfying  jobs that focus on helping others.  Before you put all your eggs in the clinical psychology basket, explore some of the alternatives with your advisor.

I'm still looking for some student help in producing this web. If you'd like to see your name in print (as an editor), please contact me (Goldsteinm@ccsu.edu).

Using Mind-it to keep current with PsychNotes

The instructions below will tell you how to set this service up for PsychNotes -- And remember, you only need to do this ONCE.  After you do, Mind-it will send an e-mail to notify you of updates to the site, and the e-mail message will contain a hyperlink you can click on to visit PsychNotes.

(1) Type in your e-mail address in the box below where it says "Enter email address".
(2) Click the "Mind-it" button and you will be taken to the Mind-it web site.
(3) You will be asked for a password; YOU DO NOT NEED TO GIVE THEM YOUR CCSU PASSWORD -- You should create your own password especially for Mind-it.  Then, just follow instructions (you don't need to do much more).
(4) Wait and your browser will automatically take you back to the PsychNotes web site.
